HP 4610 Printer Review

The HP LaserJet 4610 color laser printer is designed for the small to medium office environment. It features high capacities for high-volume printing, but mediocre color printing quality and a high price are its major downsides. If you need a multifunction color printer to compliment the 4610, the HP CM2320 toner printer is an excellent choice.

The HP 4610 color laser printer, also known as the 4610N, is not only a high-volume machine right out of the box, but it has room to grow. Its maximum monthly print volume is 85,000, which means it is built for a heavy work environment, but its initial size and design is compact enough to fit the small office environment. This makes it perfect for a small office expecting growth, as its printing engine is capable of handling much more in the future. Extra paper trays can be added for more paper capacity, and high-yield toner cartridges will increase the amount of time between toner replacements. An optional ethernet upgrade adds connectivity options and an optional hard drive upgrade adds more storage for high-volume offices.

Print speed is average, around 17 pages per minute for both color and monochrome prints. While 17 pages per minute for monochrome is a bit slow in comparison to the competition, the matching color printing speed is impressive, as color printing speed is usually well below monochrome speeds. Unfortunately, color printing quality is below average. Color and graphics prints have a number of issues, including banding and inaccurate colors. Text quality is quite good, remaining sharp and detailed even at small font sizes. It's true that most office environments will buy a laser printer mainly for quality text printing, but it is hard to justify the unit's high price tag for lackluster color print quality when a good monochrome laser could be had for much less. HP LaserJet 4610 toner cartridges have a very large capacity per toner. Just like the high volume machine that they were designed for, the HP 4610 toner cartridges will not disappoint. Each black laser toner cartridge has a page yield of 9,000 pages, and each color laser toner cartridge has a page yield of 8,000 pages. The unit uses the same part number as HP 4600 toner toner cartridges, which helps keep toner cost lower for both models.

Overall, the HP LaserJet 4610 is a solid workhorse with great expandability options. With its mixed print quality and average printing speeds, however, it may not justify its expensive price.
