The HP DesignJet 4500 prints with thermal inkjet technology that can produce high quality color prints and professional black-and-white documents. Other provided features include HP's Color Layering and PhotoREt technology, which help produce documents with sharp details. On glossy media, this unit can produce projects with a resolution of 1200x1200 dpi using black and color HP 4500 ink. Other supported types of media include coated, heavyweight, photo and semi-gloss paper and on those, an optimized resolution of up to 2400x1200 dpi can be reached using DesignJet 4500 ink.

The 4500 is capable of producing wide documents at a rate of approximately 25 seconds per page. For paper handling, the large-format machine operates with two automatic role feeds that come with features such as automatic roll switching and automatic cutting. The device can handle a paper roll with a maximum length of up to 575 feet, which will be great for companies that print large banners.

The 4500's print system uses four separate HP 4500 ink cartridges that hold black, cyan, magenta and yellow printer ink. Since the DesignJet 4500 ink cartridges each hold a single color, users can replace them separately as they expire. The unit uses dye-based color printer ink that produces a droplet size of around 5 picoliters, and pigment-based black HP 4500 ink that prints droplet sizes of approximately 15 picoliters. The 4500's nozzle configuration system has 524 nozzles per black and color printhead.

Connectivity options include an EIO slot, fast ethernet base and an HP Jetdirect fast ethernet print server. With ethernet printing options, the wide-format inkjet printer can provide networking.
