HP 4256 Printer Review

The HP OfficeJet 4256 comes off as more of an enhanced inkjet printer than a true all-in-one in its design, and that is not far off in its functionality. It can print, scan, copy, and fax, but it lacks a flatbed scanner and some extras like memory card slots, instead focusing on simplicity and a low price point. As with other models in its line, HP 4256 printer ink seems a little pricey, but it comes in high capacities for a low cost per page.

Although the 4256 handles each of its functions very well, buyers should be aware of what they won't get. It does not have a flatbed scanning platen, so scanning, copying, and faxing will be limited to lose sheets that can fit through its sheet-fed scanner. It also includes no networking support whatsoever, connecting to a single PC or Mac computer via USB.

Despite these limitations, the 4256 can handle most office needs very efficiently. A handset is included for those who do a lot of faxing, and transmission speeds are 33.6 Kbps, sending and receiving at around 3 seconds per page. The maximum printing resolution of 4800x1200 creates very sharp prints, but lower-quality modes can reach speeds of up to 17 pages per minute for black and 12 pages per minute for color, when doing non-essential daily printing.

The standard configuration includes two HP 4256 ink cartridges: one black and one tricolor. An optional photo OfficeJet 4256 ink cartridge can be used for 6-color photo printing, but it does add an extra cost that may not be worth the slight improvement or the extra hassle. Remanufactured HP 4256 printer ink is available for reduced prices, and is a great cost-cutting option.

Those looking for extra functionality from their inkjet printer will probably like this unit, especially at its low price point and high quality created by OfficeJet 4256 ink. Those who plan to use its extra functions on a regular basis might find it too limited, however.
