HP 420 Printer Review

The HP Deskjet 420 is an old model with outdated features and slow resolutions. Connecting only via parallel interface, it won't seem as high tech as newer models that connect with USB or wirelessly. Its weight of 7 pounds and dimensions of 14.5x7.34x7.02 inches won't take up too much room in the office, but the unit itself will take up far too much time. When printing using strictly black HP 420 ink, only 3 pages can be printed per minute. It does have a 50 sheet paper tray, but no automatic document feeder.

Want to print in color? Using the 420 may be one of the worst options out there, taking 4 to 7 minutes to print a single photo when using color Deskjet 420 ink. For offices or businesses, there are much better inkjet units out there. For home users who print mostly text at a minimal rate, though, this could be a good fit.

A black HP 420 ink cartridge and a tricolor HP 420 ink cartridge are both needed for printing. Using the black printer ink, the highest resolution possible is 600x300 dpi. Using color Deskjet 420 ink, the highest possible is 300x300 dpi. Compared to other models on the market, this is about as low as it gets. Documents full of grainy images and blurred pictures will surely be the result of using the 420. However, if text printing is all that's needed, these resolutions will suffice.

This inkjet printer is compatible with Windows operating systems only. Executive, legal and letter paper sizes are all supported by the HP 420, as well as envelope sized paper. It can even print on transparencies. The printer ink is a little on the pricey side, and the quality of the finished documents is low. The lack of features and insufficient quality proves the Deskjet 420 to be quite the dinosaur.
