In order to achieve such a low purchase price for the HP Deskjet 3658 inkjet printer, the company seems to have paired it down to basics, without sacrificing too much speed or output quality. If buyers can put up with the high cost of Deskjet 3658 printer ink, they should find it to be a good value, especially for small spaces.

The design of the 3658 is so rounded and compact it is almost tubular. It measures 5.7x16.9x8.1 inches, and it weighs only 5.2 pounds with the HP 3658 printer ink installed. Users won't find more than a few buttons on its face, but the excellent print driver and Printer Assistant software utility can control numerous features and option, including choosing from one of five quality modes. The highest setting (Maximum dpi) offers the best quality, with an optimized resolution of 4800x1200 dpi, but much slower speeds.

There is only one connection option, a single USB port, and the cable is not included. The slide-out paper tray can hold a maximum of 100 sheets, and the output tray can hold up to 50 sheets. Supported media sizes range from a 4x6-inch photo to 8.5x11-inch media.

While not the most expensive machine to operate in its class, the cost of HP 3658 ink cartridges is still quite high. With a yield of only 190 pages for the tricolor Deskjet 3658 ink cartridge and 220 pages for the black supply, users get a very high cost per page that will add up in the long run. Even remanufactured HP 3658 ink is only marginally less expensive.

For those who need a very compact and affordable inkjet printer, the Deskjet 3658 will be a decent choice, especially given its solid speeds and high-resolution output. Buyers should beware of high operating costs, however.
