The HP LaserJet 3150 is a multifunction monochrome laser printer designed for the home or small office user. Its feature list is impressive, but slow speeds and reliance on a host computer make competing units, such as the Brother MFC-7340 toner printer, a better value.
Despite a large number of functions, the 3150 is still relatively compact in design. It measures 10.8 inches by 15.1 inches by 15.4 inches (HWD) and weighs 23.4 pounds, so it can be moved fairly easily when necessary.
The LaserJet 3150 can print, scan, copy, and fax. Most of these functions are well-designed and sets it apart from older monochrome units like the HP 1320 toner printer, but scanning and copying are limited by the lack of a flatbed scanning surface. This means that users can only scan or copy documents that will fit in the unit's automatic document feeder, which rules out books or bound pages. The automatic document feeder has a capacity of 30 sheets.
The other limiting factor of the HP 3150 is that it can only connect to a computer by parallel port. There is no USB connection available, nor an ethernet port. Further, most of its functions rely heavily on the host computer. Scanning must be initiated from the computer, as there is no way to send a scan from the unit itself.
HP 3150 toner cartridges have a capacity of 2,500 pages, which is considerably less than newer all-in-one cartridges, the HP 3550 toner. The HP 3150 toner cartridge is easy to access and replace. The unit has an EcoSave mode for conserving toner on less essentials documents, allowing users to get more out of each HP LaserJet 3150 toner cartridge. Using third-party compatible cartridges will save even more money over the OEM HP LaserJet 3150 toner.
Print speed is disappointing, at around 6 page per minute. This slows down copying as well. Text and graphics quality are both solid, but graphics print slowly due to the unit's limited memory.
Overall, the HP LaserJet 3150 has a lot of strong features, but they are marred by limited connectivity options and slow printing speeds. Lack of a flatbed scanner limits scanning options.
