HP 3100 Printer Review
The HP LaserJet 3100 is a multifunction monochrome laser printer designed for the home or small office user. It can perform a wide variety of functions, but its slow speeds and limited processing power make most tasks a chore.
The HP 3100 can print, scan, copy, and fax. Many of these features, such as copying and faxing can be done in standalone mode, without the need for a computer. Unfortunately, scanning relies heavily on the host computer. Users must load the pages to be scanned, and then walk over to the computer to initiate the scan, as there is no way to initiate a scan from the unit itself.
Copying and scanning are both well-implemented, but the unit has no flatbed scanning surface, only an automatic document feeder. This means users can not scan books, stapled pages, or any media that can not be fed through the ADF. While this may not be a big issue with most users, other multifunction units include a flatbed scanner and faster speeds for the same price.
HP 3100 toner cartridges are relatively easy to install. The HP 3100 toner cartridges are also affordably-priced, resulting in a low cost of ownership. The printer includes an EcoSave mode, which reduces the amount of toner used, and allows users to get more out of each HP LaserJet 3100 toner cartridge. Third-party compatible cartridges will save even more money over the more expensive OEM HP LaserJet 3100 toner.
Slow print speeds are the most disappointing aspect of the 3100. It prints at 6 pages per minute, well behind many competing printers. Text quality is excellent, with sharp and detailed text even at small font sizes. Graphics quality is about average.
Overall, the HP LaserJet 3100 has the range of functions that an office needs, but its slow speeds hinder its performance. Competing units have a lot more to offer for the same price.
