The HP LaserJet 3055 is a multifunction monochrome laser printer designed for home or small office use. It features built-in networking, great scanning features and excellent print quality.
Setting up the HP 3055 is a simple process consisting of installing the single toner cartridge, unlike the four colors of HP 3800 toner, connect cables, and install the included software. The printer includes software for Windows and Mac platforms, and even includes OCR (optical character recognition) software for converting scanned documents to editable text.
The design of the HP 3055 is fairly compact for a multifunction device, but still manages to incorporate a large number of features. There is a flatbed scanner and an automatic document feeder which can handle up to 50 pages for automatic scanning and copying. This allows for many options, and the automatic document feeder is ideal for converting paper documents into digital archives when combined with the OCR software. Scanning is a bit on the slow side, but scans and copies come out sharp and detailed. Unlike the black only HP 1020 toner, the HP 3055 can scan in color as well as monochrome, even though the printer is only monochrome.
The 3055 includes a built-in ethernet port for sharing it across a network of computers. It has the capacities and maximum monthly volume to handle a single user or a small number of networked users quite well, but medium or large networks will probably need a printer with more expansion options, which the HP 3055 does not have.
HP LaserJet 3055 toner capacity also cannot be expanded. The high yield HP LaserJet 3055 toner cartridges only bump up capacity from 2,000 pages to 3,000 per HP 3055 toner cartridge. This will be sufficient for a small user, but any large office will find that the HP 3055 toner cartridges are slightly limiting.
Print quality is excellent. Text is especially impressive, though graphics quality suffers from the typical laser printer problems. Print speed is quite good for a multifunction printer at around 17 pages per minute.
Overall, the HP LaserJet 3055 has great print quality, good speeds, low maintenance with only one printer toner cartridge, and fits a lot of functionality into a small and affordable package. Lack of expandability limits its appeal to small offices.
