HP 3015 Printer Review

The HP LaserJet 3015 is a multifunction monochrome laser printer designed for the personal or small office user. It combines many useful functions into an affordable, easy-to-use machine, but some of its functions work better than others.

The HP 3015 can print, scan, copy, and fax. It is able handle virtually all the office tasks a home or small office user could need, but it lacks the capacities and speed to handle very many users. With an input paper capacity of 150 sheets, it will need to refilled often as a shared printer, and its speed of 12 pages per minute will probably start to seem slow among multiple users. The Canon MF4150 toner printer is very similar, but can produce at a much faster rate. The design of the HP 3015 is very compact, especially for a multifunction printer. It measures 18 inches by 16.5 inches by 13 inches (HWD) and weighs just 20 pounds.

Printing and faxing both work quite well. Scanning and copying are somewhat limited, however, by the lack of a flatbed scanning surface. The HP 3015 has only a sheet fed scanner, which means it can only scan single sheets at a time, and only sheets that fit a particular size. This design reduces the cost, but in this case, greatly reducing functionality as well. Scan quality leaves a little to be desired as well. The unit can scan in both color and monochrome, but neither is particularly impressive. Scan quality should be good enough for faxing and the occasional copy, but heavier users may be disappointed. Still, it is quite the upgrade from the HP P1006 toner printer that came before it.

Print quality is generally good, but a little below average for a laser printer. Text is not as good as most dedicated laser printers, and graphics quality suffers a little more than a typical laser as well. Some tradeoff in quality is usually expected in a multifunction, but the HP 3015 still disappoints somewhat. Print speed is around 12 pages per minute.

HP LaserJet 3015 toner cartridges are meant for a user with small printing needs. Although there is both a standard and high capacity version, both have such a small page yield that any large print jobs will force the user to replace them frequently. At 2,000 pages per standard yield HP 3015 toner and 3,000 pages per high yield HP 3015 toner, a prospective buyer will want to look over their printing needs to make sure that the HP LaserJet 3015 toner will fit them. If looking to print quality photos and graphics in color, the LaserJet 3600 toner printer is a good choice.

Overall, the HP LaserJet 3015 offers a good feature set in a compact, affordable package. Poor scan quality and a few design missteps hold it back, and small capacities limit its appeal to only users with low-volume needs.
