HP 2820 Printer Review

The HP LaserJet 2820 is a color laser printer with multifunction features included. The multifunction features include print, copy, scan, and fax. Most of these features can be done remotely over the network without requiring the user to be in front of the machine. No longer does an office need a laser printer for quality printing and a second copy machine for copies. This unit can handle all the functions that the typical office will need from a printer and a copier.

One extremely convenient feature is the network scanning feature. This allows a user to scan a document into the HP 2820 and have the resulting digital file go across the network back to their own desktop. When combined with the 50-page automatic document feeder, a user can scan up to 50 pages at a time in this way without having to stand at the machine and wait. There is also a flatbed scanner for scanning large books or other items that can not be fed through the automatic feed. Scanning can be done at up to 1200 dpi resolution for high-quality scans, even across the network. The copier includes the ability to do 2-up and 4-up copies (2 or 4 pages copied to one page) and to reduce or enlarge from 25 to 400%. Direct photo printing is also available, allowing users to print photos without the need for a PC.

The 125-sheet multipurpose tray seems a bit small for a printer and a copier combined, but a second 250-sheet tray can be purchased as an optional upgrade for more capacity. The unit includes USB and ethernet connections out of the box. The included ethernet connection makes sharing across the network simple and easy, and the included software allows remote management of the print jobs and settings from any computer on the network.

HP LaserJet 2820 toner cartridges have a good page yield that will satisfy most small offices with moderate printing needs. Each color HP 2820 toner has a capacity of 4,000 pages, and the black HP 2820 toners have a capacity of 5,000 pages per HP LaserJet 2820 toner cartridge.

Overall, the HP LaserJet 2820 does a great job at combining the best features of a networked laser printer with the features of a scanner and copier. The result is a business machine that is likely all that an office will ever need. If you do not need the scanner and copier functionality, the LaserJet 2550 toner printer should be considered.
