The HP LaserJet 2550 color laser printer is designed with a small but expanding office in mind. One of the first things to stand out about the unit is its modern design aesthetic. Gone is the typical gray or beige box look, like the LaserJet 2840 toner printer, replaced with curved edges and some blue tones. It is good to see some variety in an industry where most models all look the same.

The HP 2550 color laser printer is fairly basic on the surface, offering only a barebones set of options and features, but it seems built for expansion, making it a great choice for offices on a budget but with an eye toward future growth. For example, while it only includes a USB or parallel connection with the unit, meaning that network sharing will require a PC connection, there is an ethernet upgrade option, for direct connection to the network. Also, though the initial paper capacity is quite low, with only a 125-sheet multipurpose tray included, users can add an optional 250 or 500 sheet tray for extra capacity as the need arises. Furthermore, it comes in multiple models with different features. The 2550 is the base model, the 2550N adds networking, the 2550L adds extra paper capacity, and the 2550LN adds all of the above.

Print quality is excellent. Text is dark and sharp, even down to small fonts, like the HP 4000 toner printer. Color printing is average, but good for the price. Print speeds are a little slow, but acceptable for the price point. The next model up is the LaserJet 4050 toner printer that offers faster printing speeds. Black print speeds are around 12 pages per minute, with color at around 3.9 pages per minute. Those whose needs include a large volume of color printing may want to consider the slow color speeds on this model. Given that the average office does very little color printing when compared to black, this will be a minor issue for most.
