When buyers think of large-format printing, they probably don't think of an inkjet printer as compact as the HP Deskjet 1280. While it can't handle large rolls, it can support larger media like Tabloid and A3+ sizes, which is perfect for smaller posters and other creative projects. Print speeds are fast, at up to 14 pages per minute in black and 11 pages per minute in color, but expensive OEM HP 1280 printer ink could be an issue with frequent use.

The 1280 has a simple, dark gray design, and its footprint is surprisingly compact, considering its support for larger formats. It measures 9.2x23.3x15 inches with its tray closed, and weighs only 22 pounds. Its 8 MB of RAM can't be upgraded, which could lead to some slowdowns with heavier use. Mac users will be glad to know that both Windows and Mac platforms are supported, and the device connects via USB or parallel port.

The input tray can hold a maximum of 150 sheets of standard paper, and there are 3 paper paths to choose from to avoid bending certain media types. A sensor inside the device can alert users when the width of the loaded media doesn't match the expected settings. A maximum monthly duty cycle of 5,000 and relatively small capacities for Deskjet 1280 printer ink mean it is best-suited for moderate use.

The black HP 1280 ink cartridge has a yield of up to 830 pages. The tricolor Deskjet 1280 ink cartridge combines cyan, magenta, and yellow into a single supply with a yield of 450 pages. Prices for the OEM versions are high, but using remanufactured HP 1280 ink instead can cut costs by more than half, making it a very affordable machine.

Buyers who want to create larger projects will love the 1280's combination of affordability and a compact design. Running costs are comparable to the average home inkjet model, and print speeds are quite fast.
