There are many small offices that are looking for stand-alone fax or copy machines, rather than something that is connected to a computer. The HP Fax 1220 was released in 2001 and since been discontinued, though it can still be found in many small offices. These days, most businesses are looking for devices with multiple functions. And though this unit can fax and copy, it falls a bit behind in current work environments. However, it is a high-quality inkjet fax machine.

There are only two HP 1220 ink cartridges, one black and the other tricolor. The tricolor tank consists of yellow, magenta and cyan printer ink. Using either kind of Fax 1220 ink, the maximum resolution of 600x600 dpi can be reached. The resolution is measured by the amount of ink dots that are ejected through nozzles on the printhead. This system is referred to as drop-on-demand technology.

The fax machine has a 14.4 kbps modem that can send pages in about 3 seconds. Using HP 1220 ink, it can obtain a resolution of 300x300 dpi. The printer ink helps the copy machine portion to produce up to 12 copies per minute. Replacement Fax 1220 ink is available online from the original manufacturer or third party vendors.

The 1220 connects via USB and parallel ports and weighs over 25 pounds. It has fax forwarding and can zoom anywhere from 25%-400%. There is an automatic document feeder built in as well as 8 MB of RAM and a 150-sheet input tray. It has 100 speed dials and a 90-page memory. There is also a digital answering machine.
