Remember the old days of taking rolls of film or disposable cameras to the local drug store to have pictures developed for a ridiculous fee? Well those days have passed, and now the world has inkjet printers like the HP Photosmart 1218. This unit was designed specifically for printing photos, and it can do so directly from memory cards or digital cameras. There is also a USB and a parallel connection as well as optional networking capabilities. Its sister model, the HP 1218xi has built-in wireless capabilities.

Equipped with a 100-sheet input tray and a 50-sheet output tray as well as 16 MB of built-in RAM, the 1218 is ready for action. Plug it in to the wall and to the PC via USB and it will automatically configure itself so it is ready to be used. It has a 5,000 page monthly duty cycle, so high-volume printing is feasible. However, the HP 1218 ink cartridges do not have high page yields. The black can only print 830 pages per tank and the color Photosmart 1218 ink cartridge yields about 450 pages. So if this machine is used for big print jobs, the printer ink will run out quickly. Replacement HP 1218 ink is available online, new or remanufactured

Black HP 1218 ink, when being used exclusively, can produce up to 17 pages per minute at a resolution of 600x600 dpi. When the color printer ink is added into it, only 13 pages per minute can be printed at a maximum resolution of 2400x1200 dpi. The drop-on-demand technology uses nozzles to eject the Photosmart 1218 ink onto the page in small dots.

This inkjet printer comes with automatic double sided printing, and weighs just over 15 pounds. It measures 17.32x8.03x17.12 inches, meaning it will fit nicely on almost any desk top.
