The HP Deskjet 1014 is a pretty basic inkjet printer with solid speeds and high-quality output, but buyers don't get much else. Its compact design is space-efficient, and it can print at ISO-rated speeds of up to 7 pages per minute for black and 4 pages per minute in color. High-capacity HP 1014 printer ink supplies are also available to keep costs down.

The 1014 has full support for both Windows and Mac operating systems, and it connects via USB 2.0 port. This might be a bit of a disappointment for users hoping for networking features. Advanced features like HP's ePrint are left out in favor of the machine's very low purchase price, but buyers looking for rock-bottom prices probably won't mind the tradeoffs.

The paper handling could be improved a bit. The input paper capacity is only 60 sheets, and the output tray is limited to 25 sheets. Needless to say, the device is not built for any serious printing volume. When folded up and not in use, the unit measures only 5 inches tall, with a footprint of 16.7x8.5 inches. Even more impressive, it weighs just 4.55 pounds, though this doesn't include the Deskjet 1014 printer ink cartridges.

The standard HP 1014 ink cartridges have yields of 190 pages for black and 165 pages for the tricolor supply. Purchasing the high-capacity Deskjet 1014 ink supplies more than doubles the yield, at less than double the price. Remanufactured HP 1014 ink is available at even lower prices, while still maintaining the higher capacity, which makes them the most cost-effective choice overall.

Buyers who want a simple, no-frills inkjet printer should be quite happy with the Deskjet 1014. Its speed and capacity are a good fit for a single home user, but beyond that, buyers might want a device with more features and a little more capacity.
