Epson WP-4540 Printer Review

The general rule for printers is that laser models are for business, and inkjet models are for home users. The Epson WorkForce Pro 4540 breaks out of the stereotype as a very capable color printer that uses Epson 4540 ink, but also has the advanced features office users expect to find. Buyers get the benefit of inexpensive printer ink without sacrificing features, and print speed is fast, at ISO-rated speeds of up to 16 pages per minute in black and 11 pages per minute in color.

The 4540 is more bulky than average, but this is mainly due to its numerous functions, such as scanning, printing, faxing, and copying. It still manages to keep a fairly compact footprint, however, so it won't take up too much surface space. Two paper trays are included, and each can hold up to 250 sheets. There is also a rear-feed tray that can handle larger media, as it does not bend the paper as it passes through the machine.

Replacing Epson 4540 ink cartridges is a bit more complicated, as it uses four WorkForce Pro 4540 ink cartridges in its printer ink system. This gives more accurate colors, however, and also helps reduce waste for the WorkForce Pro 4540 ink, since users only replace individual empty tanks.

In a review of the 4540, PCWorld highlighted its fast performance and the low cost of Epson 4540 ink, as well as its high paper capacity. They found wireless scanning a bit difficult to use, and also found the lack of legal-size media support disappointing.

With a high paper capacity, built-in wireless support, and many other great features, the Epson 4540 is an excellent value. It has nearly every feature of larger, more expensive machines, but comes with a price and design that is more fitting to small office and limited budgets.
