The Dell 1230cn is a personal color laser printer build for home offices with minimal needs. With a size of 15.3x12.3x9.6 inches, buyers should have no problem finding a spot to place it, and the weight of only 24.3 pounds, though a little heavy for a home office machine, should be easy enough for users to lift. Using its needed black Dell 1230cn toner cartridge, speeds as fast as 17 pages per minute can be produced. When printing with color printer toner, though, the speeds are a little slower at only 4 pages per minute. Though these speeds wouldn't do in offices where many pages must be produced every day, they should be just fine for those who print only a few documents at a time. Offering connection via USB only, most modern homes will easily be able to connect. Up to 20,000 pages can be produced every month, and Windows and Mac operating systems are both compatible with the 1230cn.

Four Dell 1230cn toner cartridges are needed for operation. There are 3 colored toners—cyan, yellow and magenta—and one full of black printer toner. The color Dell 1230cn toner lasts 1,000 pages before needing replaced, while the black lasts 1,500 pages.

Resolutions as high as 2400x600 dpi are possible for black-and-white prints and color prints alike. Labels, cards, transparencies, envelopes, labels and plain paper are all supported by the machine, and sizes of up to 8.5x11.7 inches are compatible. Up to 150 sheets can fit into the input tray at one time, while only 100 sheets can fit in the output tray.

The cost per page using the Dell 1230cn toner is relatively high, which may be the machine's only true downside. Remanufactured toners are available from third party vendors, though, that cost only a fraction of the price.
