Canon Pro-100 Printer Review

The Canon PIXMA Pro-100 is a big step up from a basic inkjet printer, with professional-quality output and wide format support. It can print an 8x10 image in around 51 seconds, and it uses 8 colors of Canon Pro-100 printer ink for excellent results. It can support widths up to 13 inches, for more variety in media choices.

The Pro-100 will likely be a big hit with photographers, especially on a smaller scale. It measures only 8.5x27.2x15.2 inches, with a weight of only 43.2 pounds, including the PIXMA Pro-100 printer ink supplies. It can be connected via USB, ethernet, or Wi-Fi, with a PictBridge port on the front for connecting a digital camera directly. Support for Apple's AirPrint makes it easy to print from iOS devices as well.

The Pro-100 can handle a variety of media types, including glossy, matte, super high gloss, and more, and it can even print directly onto inkjet printable CDs, DVDs, or Blu-ray discs. This allows users to make a great-looking custom disc without sticky labels that can cause problems. The input paper capacity is only 150 sheets of plain paper, but this should be adequate for small-scale use.

Users need to install 8 different Canon Pro-100 ink cartridges for even more accurate colors in their prints. In addition to the standard cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, the system also uses gray, light gray, photo cyan, and photo magenta PIXMA Pro-100 ink cartridges. The extra cost of the additional Canon Pro-100 ink colors could be a bit of a burden for small budgets, however.

There is little doubt that the PIXMA Pro-100 provides some of the best output in its class. Its compact design, wide format support, and multiple connectivity options are beneficial, but its price may be too high for non-professionals.
