The Canon PIXMA Pro-1 is a color inkjet photo printer aimed at professional photographers and designers who want high-quality output, but it tends to be a little bulky and heavy for an A3+ printer. The 12 colors of Canon Pro-1 printer ink may seem like a lot, but compatible replacements can make maintenance more affordable.

The large-format support of the Pro-1 is one of its best features. It can print on media up to 13x19 inches in size, adding a lot of versatility in paper handling. There is a rear tray that can hold up to 150 sheets of plain paper or 20 sheets of photo paper, and a single-sheet manual feeder that provides a straight paper path for thicker media.

The machine itself is larger than most inkjet models and somewhat heavier as well. It measures 9.5x18.2x27.4 inches, and weighs 60.9 pounds. It can connect directly to a computer via USB 2.0, and there is an ethernet port included for connecting to a network for sharing. Reviewers note that the Pro-1 produces gallery-quality photo prints, thanks in part to the 12 PIXMA Pro-1 ink cartridges, and the unit's high resolution of 4800x2400 dpi when using color PIXMA Pro-1 printer ink.

All of the extra colors provided by the Canon Pro-1 ink cartridges certainly enhance the quality of prints, but replacing so many supplies would seem to get expensive. Luckily, compatible Canon Pro-1 ink is available at much lower prices than OEM equivalents, which can save users a lot of money, and make it a viable choice for cost-effective printing.

Professional photographers, designers, and enthusiasts should appreciate the stellar photo quality of the Canon Pro-1. Its purchase price is a little steep, however, so it isn't really recommended for average users.
