This particular inkjet device was meant for small-scale production, specifically a home office or small workgroup. Large offices that have high-volume daily tasks would be better off with an office laser printer focused more on speed rather than precise quality.

There are versatile connection options for the MX512 that will appeal to a number of consumers. Those in a work group will appreciate the ethernet option as it will allow them to set up a small network for multiple users to share. Users in a home office may prefer to use the wireless connection option, as wires are undesirable in small spaces. A person using the MX512 for personal printing will benefit most from the memory cards slots and PictBridge connections, which are intended specifically for simple photo printing.

This is a color inkjet printer, but only two Canon MX512 ink cartridge are used during operation. Though this may seem limiting, indeed it is not as four colors of printer ink are still present. The way this works is cyan, magenta and yellow share the same PIXMA MX512 ink cartridge and black is alone. When using only the black Canon MX512 ink, a resolution of 600x600 dpi can be created. Up to 4800x1200 dpi can be reached in color. Replacement printer ink will be needed after 400 prints with the tricolor PIXMA MX512 ink and 300 prints in black.

Faxes can be processed in about 3 seconds and the scanner has an impressive internal 48-bit color depth. The copies offers resizing options, but the maximum copying resolution created by the Canon MX5120 ink is 600x600 dpi in black-and-white or color.
