The Canon PIXMA MG5422 has many of the same features of larger all-in-one inkjets in the company's lineup, but it pairs down to basics, losing a few features like an automatic document feeder, but also trimming down its price and its size. With ESAT speeds of 15 pages per minute for black and 10 pages per minute for color, it is respectably fast, and high-capacity Canon MG5422 printer ink supplies are available for a lower cost per page.

Besides the lack of an ADF, few major compromises were made to achieve the MG5422's compact frame. It includes a large, 3-inch color LCD for previewing and editing images and navigating the menus, and has extras like memory card slots and a PictBridge port on the front panel. The ChromaLife 100+ system and PIXMA MG5422 printer ink result in a maximum color resolution of up to 9600x2400 dpi for sharp output quality, and reviewers noted that both text and photos were above average for its class.

Mobile and web printing features abound. Support for Google Cloud Print and Apple's AirPrint are augmented by Canon's own PIXMA Cloud Link service and specialized apps. Users can even print by sending an email directly to a special address, allowing for local or remote printing from almost any device.

The Canon MG5422 ink system is very advanced, able to produce droplets as small as 1 picoliter for very detailed images. Replacing all five of the PIXMA MG5422 ink cartridges might seem a bit daunting, however, with two types of black. The most cost-effective option is to use the high-capacity XL versions of Canon MG5422 ink cartridges, which provide a lower cost per page.

For the buyer who wants a simple all-in-one inkjet solution without the need for more serious office work, the PIXMA MG5422 should be an excellent solution. Those on the business-centric side of things might want to opt for a model with an ADF.
