As one of the more compact color laser models in the imageCLASS line, the Canon imageCLASS LBP7780Cdn features much of the same reliability and speed of larger models, without the same high price tag. At up to 33 pages per minute, it is quite fast, and it adds duplexing and networking to the LBP7780 base model. Canon LBP7780Cdn printer toner can be quite expensive, however.

The LBP7780Cdn won't be small enough for home use, or even some small offices, but its frame of 15.8x20.4x20.9 inches doesn't take up too much space, and even with the imageCLASS LBP7780Cdn toner supplies installed, it weighs a little under 70 pounds. Surprisingly, it still manages to pack in a 500-sheet main tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose tray.

The device can connect via USB, but includes an ethernet port that will probably see more use. Windows and Mac platforms are supported, as well as a few others such as Citrix and Linux variations.

The unit's output quality did not impress some professional reviewers, as they mentioned only average text quality and graphics that would not suffice for handing to a client. Photos also exhibited some banding and graininess in some tests.

The price of replacement toners is high, and even with fairly large capacities of around 6,400 pages for each color Canon LBP7780Cdn toner cartridge and 12,000 pages for black, it is one of the more expensive laser models in its class to operate. Replacing the imageCLASS LBP7780Cdn toner cartridges is a quick and simple process, at least.

The LBP7780Cdn has a lot to offer for its reasonable purchase price and small footprint, but it is tough to overcome the cost of Canon LBP7780Cdn toner replacements. Despite its fast speeds, its average output quality may not be enough to entice most buyers.
