Canon 650i Printer Review

The Canon LASER CLASS 650i is a multifunction laser fax machine that can handle color scanning, with monochrome copying and basic network printing at speeds of up to 35 pages per minute. Its compact footprint is a good fit in small office spaces, but expensive Canon 650i printer toner supplies are definitely not small office friendly.

The 650i has a fairly compact design that measures 17x18.6x18.6 inches, and it weighs around 42.8 pounds with the LASER CLASS 650i toner cartridge installed. For faxing, it includes a telephone handset, which is somewhat of a rare feature on modern machines, but is very convenient for testing connection issues.

As a contrast to the 650 base model, the 650i has a few extra features like the ability to send color scans in a variety of different ways such as email, saving on paper and toners at the same time. This is a higher-quality alternative to faxing that will slowly become the standard in most offices, as it is also more convenient.

The paper handling of the 650i could be considered a bit light duty in its standard configuration. It includes only one main tray with a capacity of 250 sheets, with a 50-sheet bypass tray. Adding an optional 500-sheet tray opens up more options, however, and allows users to load more than one type or size of media as well. The automatic document feeder can handle duplex sheets, and holds up to 50 pages at once for fast scanning.

As with other models in its lineup, the unit suffers from high operating costs, as LASER CLASS 650i toner is expensive to replace. Each Canon 650i toner cartridge can supply around 6,400 pages of output, but is much more expensive than those of other models in its class.

The 650i will be very appealing to users who do a lot of faxing, but also to those who want to slowly transition to sending scans digitally. Unfortunately, its quick speeds and high-quality output are hampered by the cost of Canon 650i toner.
