Canon iPF9400 Printer Review

The Canon imagePROGRAF iPF9400 color inkjet printer expands upon the similar iPF8400 model with even wider printing, with support for media up to 60 inches in width. This adds more flexibility in printing applications, but also increases the cost significantly. The unit still uses the same 12-color system of Canon iPF9400 printer ink, which can be expensive to replace.

Despite the need for a lot of width in its design, the machine is otherwise relatively compact. It measures 45x90.5x30.2 inches, with an included stand on rollers to make it easy to move around, despite its 316 pound weight. It can support both cut sheet and roll feed media, up to 59 feet, and a maximum roll diameter of 5.9 inches. Impressively, the inkjet can support borderless printing up to the full width of 60 inches.

Users have a lot of flexibility in print settings to balance speed and image quality. At the fastest print setting, the machine optimizes the application of the imagePROGRAF iPF9400 ink to prioritize speed, with a slight reduction in quality. The Color Calibration Management System can also keep Canon iPF9400 ink colors consistent when working in tandem with other machines, so that output colors will be sure to match.

The 12 colors of printer ink can produce impressive results, but they also represent a problem in that the Canon iPF9400 ink cartridges can be quite expensive to replace. The system does implement a sub ink tank system that stores some of each color so that imagePROGRAF iPF9400 ink cartridges can be replaced on-the-fly without interrupting printing, which can be essential for very long media.

Due to its large frame, high price tag, and expensive running costs, the Canon iPF9400 will only appeal to large design houses and professional artists. It does provide stellar print quality, and support a wide range of media to handle nearly any wide format printing job users can throw at it, however.
