An excellent photo printer, the Canon PIXMA iP6220D includes a 2.5" LCD screen which allows for controlling red-eye and for photo enhancement. Canon PIXMA iP6220D ink is contained in two tri-color cartridges, instead of individual color cartridges like the iP6600D.
Printer size is 17.3"w by 10.3"d by 6.8"h. Compatible media includes envelopes, plain and photo paper, transparencies and photo stickers. Photo papers that work with this printer ink include semi-gloss, glossy and matte. The Canon iP6220D ink cartridges have their own built-in printer ink heads. Canon iP6220D inkjet cartridges, through their attached print heads, provide color and black and white resolution of 4800 by 1200 dpi.
Multiple media cards can be used with the iP6220D, including CompactFlash, SmartMedia, SD Memory and Memory Stick. The unit has stand-alone functioning using a media card and the onboard LCD screen. OS compatibility includes Windows 98, Windows ME and 2000, Vista and XP. It will also work with Mac OS X 10.2.1. Bundled software includes Easy-PhotoPrint 3.3, PhotoRecord and Easy-WebPrint. Buffer memory is 42k.
CNET editors summarize their opinion of the Canon PIXMA iP6220D inkjet unit this way: "the iP6220D shares little in common with its more expensive sibling, the iP6600D. It has a smaller LCD, a different print head--2 picoliter droplets rather than 1--and uses two tricolor cartridges. Unless you're really cash strapped, the higher-price model is probably a better bet." Users offer up a mixed opinion. Several complain of excess noise while printing and there is also a common complaint of slow text printing. Most agree that photo printing quality should be a primary buying consideration.
For the buyer focused on borderless prints as a priority over text printing, this is a reasonably good choice. CNET editor's advice is to spend more and purchase the iP6600D for even better quality prints and a larger LCD display.
