Canon iP1800 Printer Review

The Canon iP1800 is an inexpensive photo printer that produces quality photos at a decent output rate. It can print up to 20 pages per minute in black, 16 pages per minute in color, and approximately 70 seconds for a 4"x6" color picture. Though the Pixma iP1800 inkjet printer may be lacking many features that make photo units so great, for the low price of $50, it is ideal for amateur photographers or graphic designers with a tight budget.

Among the features left out during the low cost manufacturing of the Canon iP1800 inkjet printer, the absence of an output tray is the most puzzling. It seems like a simple piece of plastic that pulls out from under the eject slot would have been an inexpensive and logical addition. It also doesn't have a slot for memory cards or a port for printing directly from a camera. With the Canon iP1800, users can print exclusively from a PC. A positive feature is that it is compatible with Mac and Windows, and it supports Vista.

There are only 2 Canon iP1800 ink cartridges in this unit- a tri-color tank containing cyan, yellow and magenta, and a special pigment based black printer ink. The pigment base produces more crisp and clear text than more commonly used dye based black. The patented print head nozzle technology found in most Canon products dispenses the Canon iP1800 ink in tiny 2 picoliter droplets. This unit has over 1,400 nozzles. Experts and consumers both give the Canon iP1800 3 out of 5 stars. Testing shows this unit is faster than the comparable Epson Stylus C88 and the Lexmark Z845. The iP1800 measures 17.4x6.0x9.3 inches and weighs 7.3 pounds. It has a solid software package that comes with programs that make it easy to enhance photos and make albums or stickers. This machine is pretty basic but covers the needs of casual photographers without a high budget.
