With quick speeds of up to 35 pages per minute, the Canon imageRUNNER LBP3480 is an appealing choice for the small office. Its compact design won't eat up too much surface spaces, and it has a bit of upgradeability for future growth. It is somewhat hindered by expensive imageRUNNER LBP3480 printer toner supplies, however, making it costly to operate.

The control panel of the LBP3480 isn't as robust as one would find on a multifunction device, but it still gets the job done. The machine includes a 5-line LCD screen, and features navigation buttons for the menu system. While the majority of features can be controlled through the driver software, the LCD can help users keep tabs on error messages, or see notifications when it has run out of paper or Canon LBP3480 toner.

The unit includes a standard USB port for direction connection to a computer, and an ethernet port for connecting to a shared network. A front USB port can be used for connecting flash drives and other storage media for direct printing, though navigating through files is a bit difficult on such a small screen. The standard paper tray holds just 250 sheets, but a fold-out manual bypass tray can hold 50 sheets as well. An extra 500-sheet tray can also be added if needed.

Of course, the unit's operating costs really come down to the cost of toners. Unfortunately, this is where the Canon LBP3480 toner cartridges are disappointing, as they are quite expensive. Features like standard duplexing and built-in networking combine with the LBP3480's fast print speeds to make it an appealing model for small offices. With expensive OEM Canon LBP3480 toner as a user's only option for supplies, however, most buyers should probably consider a more economical model.
