The i990 is designed to show every color tone and bring to life even the smallest details. Upgraded from previous models in this line of inkjet printers, there are 7 different Canon i990 ink cartridges that can be used. Cyan, magenta, yellow and black are the standard printer ink colors found in most units, and some add the specialty photo magenta and photo cyan. This machine offers a bonus option of a red Canon i990 ink cartridge. Though it is not required, it can elevate the quality of the final product.

When using only the black Canon i990 ink, which is common for standard text documents such as school papers and flight itineraries, as many as 16 pages per minute can be printed. However, in full color the output rate slows a bit to 12 pages per minute. A 4x6 color photo can be printed in less than 30 seconds and still have the 4800x1200 dpi resolution that Canon i990 ink is capable of producing.

The memory card slots and PictBridge connection allow users to print without using a computer at all. However, to print using the enhancement options only available from a computer, the USB port can be used for connection. Affordable and able to produce high-quality photos, the i990 is a great personal inkjet printer.
