The Brother MFC-9600 is a multifunction monochrome laser printer designed for the home or small office user. It offers excellent print quality and fast speeds, but fax speed is slow. The MFC-9600 is a true all-in-one machine, as it can print, copy, scan and fax. Each of these functions is very well-designed and easy to use, although copying is probably the weakest.

The Brother MFC-9600 works well as a standalone fax machine and a copier. Faxing speed is a little slow, at 14.4 kbps, which is disappointing. The unit has a 30-sheet automatic document feeder for scanning, but also has a flatbed scanning surface for documents that can't be fed through the document feeder. Color scanning is supported, even though the printer is monochrome-only, at a resolution up to 1,200 dpi interpolated. One thing lacking is a built-in ethernet port for connecting to a network. Users can connect the printer to a network by using a print server or host computer, but some of its functions won't be available remotely.

The Brother MFC-9600 toner cartridges are easy to replace. Simply open the front panel to access the cartridge. Brother MFC-9600 toner cartridges have a capacity of 3,000 pages, but high-yield cartridges are also available with a capacity of 6,000 pages each.

Copying is well-designed, but fairly basic. Users planning to do a high volume of copying may wish to look for a more full-featured copy machine, but for light use, it is adequate. Print speed is around 12 pages per minute, which is good, but a little slower than competing units. Print quality is excellent. Sharp, detailed text is the highlight, but graphics and photos come out looking solid as well.

Overall, the Brother MFC-9600 is an excellent all-in-one machine. Print quality is excellent and functions are intuitive and easy to use. Slow fax speeds are its only real downside.
