The Brother MFC-8840 is a multifunction monochrome laser printer designed for the small or medium office environment. It provides excellent integration of multiple features, fast printing speeds, and solid print quality is a relatively compact design.

The Brother MFC-8840 can print, scan, copy, and fax. Each function is very well designed, and intuitive to use, but what is very impressive is the way Brother integrates each function, and seems to think of every possible scenario for how users might want to work. Users can also send faxes directly from a computer, without having to walk up to the machine.

Although the MFC-8840 is a monochrome printer, the machine can scan in full-color, up to 24-bit color depth. If you also need color printing along with scanning and faxing, consider the Brother MFC-8840 toner printer. Scans can be sent to a variety of locations, including a shared folder on the network, and users can even require a PIN code to be entered before a scan can be sent to their computer. The MFC-8840 has an automatic document feeder for scanning, which can hold up to 50 pages, and also has a flatbed scanner for originals that can't be sheet fed.

The MFC-8840 is a fairly compact machine, although its scanning unit makes it larger than a dedicated laser printer. The unit measures 18.8 inches by 21.3 inches by 17.8 inches (HWD), and weighs around 40 pounds. Given its wide array of features, it is surprising how compact it is.

Print quality is quite good. Text is sharp and detailed, though a little below the quality of some of Brother's dedicated lasers. Graphics quality is a little disappointing, but still workable for interoffice printing. The Brother MFC-8840 toner cartridges have a capacity of 3,300 pages and the high-yield version has twice the capacity with up to 6,700 page yield. The high-yield cartridge is the more economical of the two, and buying third-party compatible cartridges rather than the more expensive brand Brother MFC-8840 toner cartridge can reduce costs even more.

Overall, the Brother MFC-8840 is a full-featured and very compact printer at a very affordable price. Its intuitive features are very easy to understand and use. Users who plan to do a lot of graphics printing may need to look at another printer option.
