The Brother MFC-7240 has the affordable price and compact size of a personal laser printer, with the added capabilities of copying, scanning, and faxing. Despite its small frame, it includes extras like a handset and document feeder, and it can print up to 21 pages per minute.

Even with its extra functions, the MFC-7240 manages to be only a little larger than the average personal printer. It measures just 12.2x14.7x14.6 inches and weighs a little less than 20 pounds before the Brother MFC-7240 printer toner is installed. The control panel features a full number keypad for faxing, and a number of dedicated one-touch dial buttons for quick access.

The input paper tray can hold up to 250 sheets, which is a solid amount for a home or small office user, though it can't be expanded beyond this capacity. The automatic document feeder is small, with a capacity of only 20 pages, and there is no flatbed scanner, so users will be limited as to the type and size of documents they can scan.

Walk-up faxing and copying is supported, though users also have the option of a PC Fax feature. This allows users to fax a document right from their computer, similar to sending it for printing. OCR software is included for turning scanned documents into editable text as well, rounding out the digital workflow.

Users replace toners from an easy-access front panel, and the Brother MFC-7240 toner cartridges come in both standard and high-capacity sizes. The standard version provides up to 1,200 pages, but the high-capacity Brother MFC-7240 toner cartridge is the better value, at up to 2,600 pages.

For the individual or very small office environment, the MFC-7240 can handle a variety of tasks without taking up a lot of space. It offers solid laser quality, and the savings on Brother MFC-7240 toner over time make it an excellent value.
