The Brother MFC-7220 is a monochrome laser printer with multifunction capabilities, designed for the small office environment, an upgrade in speed and functionality is the Brother MFC-9420 toner printer. Fast printing speeds, extra fax features, and a reasonable page yield for the Brother MFC-7220 toner cartridge make it a great choice as a multifunction device.

The design of the MFC-7220 remains relatively compact, despite cramming in more design features than the average multifunction device. Measuring 10.3 inches by 14.7 inches by 14.7 inches, and weighing only 16.3 pounds, it can fit into some tight spaces, but it doesn't skip on its outer design. The control panel has more buttons and functionality than most multifunction devices due to it having a full keypad and faxing features built in to the control panel. A handset is even included, a rarity for its class and price. While the large control panel might overwhelm some small business users, others used to a dedicated fax machine will be glad for the functionality.

The MFC-7220 includes printing, faxing, scanning, and copying capabilities, and handles all of these functions quite well. It can scan at up to 1200 dpi for faxes, scans, and copies. Unlike some monochrome multifunction units, however, it is only capable of scanning in monochrome, not color. An automatic document feeder is included, with a capacity of 20 pages. Its printing engine is capable of printing at 20 pages per minute for printing, faxes, and copies.

The Brother MFC-7220 toner cartridges have a capacity of 2,500 pages, though the starter cartridge included with the unit has a capacity of only 1,500 pages. This is a cost-saving measure, but it never fails to make the consumer feel tricked, and is a practice that should be abandoned by printer manufacturers.

Print quality is generally good, with sharp text and decent graphics print quality. Print speed is around 20 pages per minute and should satisfy the needs of a small office nicely.

Overall, the Brother MFC-7220 is a capable printer with more fax features than the average multifunction unit. Its fast speeds and good print quality for the price are impressive, but its lack of color scanning is a little disappointing.
