The Brother HL-2240 is just another monochrome laser printer in a long line of basic machines. Though it has pretty much all of the same features as the previous models in this series, it does have the ability to print a bit faster at 24 pages per minute opposed to 21 pages per minute. Though these speeds may not be overly impressive, they will certainly add efficiency to a small or home office.

There is a built-in memory of 8 MB, which is more than previous models. It has a 200 MHz processor that helps speed up the transfer rates from computer to printer. It is connected via a standard USB port, and the lack of ethernet makes it non-network accessible. This will certainly be a hindrance for offices that wish to have multiple users able to print to the same unit simultaneously.

Because it is a monochrome unit, only one Brother HL-2240 toner cartridge is necessary, and it is filled with black printer toner. This can last for as many as 2,600 pages before running too low to continue printing. At this point, replacement toners will be needed and can be found online or in stores. They are easy to find and simple to install. Many toner supply stores offer recycling programs as well, which allow third party vendors to sell remanufactured Brother HL-2240 toner cartridges. Though they are less expensive than brand new printer toner, they still perform just as well.

As well as a decent output rate, this device can print documents with clear, crisp and professional quality. The Brother HL-2240 toner has the ability to reach a maximum resolution of 2400x600 dpi, which is actually higher than competing models. The Brother HL-2240 is a simple and compact laser printer for personal use, with a good balance of speed and output quality for the price. It features an optional straight paper path for thicker media, and its 250-sheet paper tray will cater well to individuals. The Toner Save mode can also help reduce expenses.

When the light marked Toner on the printer’s control panel stays lit, you need to replace the HL-2240 toner cartridge. Start by opening the access panel by grabbing the sides and pulling it toward you, then remove the cartridge by grabbing its handle and pulling it out.

Lay down some plastic or paper to catch any spills, and set the cartridge assembly on it. You need to remove the cartridge from the separate drum unit by pressing the small lever on the side, then lifting out the cartridge.

Unpack the new Brother HL-2240 toner cartridge. Remove the packing materials, then open and remove the bag. Rock the cartridge back and forth a few times to loosen up the toner inside, then remove the protective cover.

The HL-2240 cartridge can now be inserted into the drum assembly until it snaps into place. Rotate the entire drum and cartridge assembly to access the rear, and clean the corona wire before you insert it into the printer, by sliding the tab back and forth a few times, then locking it back into position.

Slide the whole assembly back into the printer, aligning it with the side rails, and press firmly to make sure it is all the way in, then close the access panel.
