Brother HL-2140 Printer Review

The Brother HL-2140 laser printer is designed for the personal or home office user. It offers excellent quality for the price in a compact design. Its capacities might be limiting for higher-volume users. For faster print speeds, the Brother Hl-5240 toner printer would be more appropriate.

Users looking for an inexpensive model, and don't need color will find a lot to like in the Brother HL-2140 laser printer. It offers incredible print quality at an extremely affordable price, especially if you find it on sale. In fact, given the low price of the unit, it could conceivably be used along with a color inkjet model for the best text quality, while using the inkjet for the best color quality.

Setup is a simple process. You simply unpack the unit, remove packing materials, install the toner cartridge, connect cables, and install the included software. Brother provides a very nicely-designed driver with many features and options available, including draft modes for saving toner.

One of the Brother HL-2140 toner cartridge downsides is the costs tend to be a bit higher than more expensive models. The laser toner cartridge has a capacity of 2,600 pages. Unfortunately, only a starter printer toner cartridge is included, which will need to be replaced much sooner. The cartridge is accessed from the front of the unit and is very easy to replace, similar to the Brother HL-2040 toner cartridges.

Print quality is excellent. Text is especially sharp and detailed, and should be the main reason for buying a laser. Graphics quality is average, but not particularly good enough to hand out to clients. As mentioned, combining the HL-2140 with a color inkjet is a very viable option given its affordable price. Print speeds are quite good at up to 23 pages per minute.

Overall, the Brother HL-2140 is a very affordable laser printer that offers great text quality and fast speeds.

The Brother HL-2170W is equipped for both wired and wireless networking, with support for 802.11b/g wireless networks. It can print up to 23 pages per minute, and holds as many as 250 sheets in the main paper tray, with a manual bypass slot for alternate media.

The toner LED light on the machine’s control panel will flash when you are low on toner, and stay solid when it is time to replace the Brother HL-2170W toner cartridge.

Before removing your empty cartridge, you should start by turning the printer off. You can then start by opening the access panel, then grabbing the handle and pulling the empty HL-2170W cartridge and drum assembly toward you.

Set the entire assembly down, then press the lock lever to release the toner cartridge, and remove it from the drum unit assembly.

Open the box for the replacement Brother HL-2170W cartridge, removing the packing materials and the bag, and then you can rock the cartridge from side to side to help distribute the toner inside. Once you have redistributed the toner, remove the protective cover.

Install the new HL-2170W toner cartridge into the drum assembly, making sure the lock lever snaps into place. Then turn the assembly around to clean the corona wire. Slide the tab on the rear of the assembly from side to side several times, then snap it back into its original position.

Slide the Brother HL-2170W toner cartridge and the assembly back into the printer, and you can close the front cover. Once you turn the printer back on, the toner LED light should no longer be lit.

You are now ready to resume printing with your Brother HL-2170W printer.
