The Brother HL-1450 is a monochrome laser printer designed for the home or small office user. It has enough RAM to handle graphics-intensive printing, and fast printing speeds, all at an affordable price. It doesn't, however, offer color capabilities.

While not the smallest personal laser printer around, the HL-1450 should be compact enough for most small office spaces, a serious consideration for home and small office users. It measures 9.3 inches by 14.2 inches by 16.9 inches, and weighs 20.3 pounds. It is a little deeper than many printers in its class, but still compact enough to put on a fairly large desk if necessary. The extra size is put to good use, however, as the HL-1450 has more paper capacity than many personal lasers, at 250 sheets, and has more memory than most, at 8 MB. This amount of RAM allows the HL-1450 to handle larger, more graphics-intensive printing tasks without any slowdown.

The Brother HL-1450 doesn't have a multipurpose tray for alternate media types and sizes, but it does have a single-sheet manual slot, which is especially useful for printing a few envelopes or labels without having to unload the standard paper. Print speed is quite good for the price, at up to 15 pages per minute. Print quality is excellent, as the HL-1450 has a 600 dpi printing engine for sharp prints. Text is readable even at very small font sizes and graphics prints look excellent as well.

Brother HL-1450 toner comes in standard cartridges, with a capacity of 3,000 pages each, or high-yield cartridges, with a capacity of 6,000 pages each. Replacing the Brother HL-1450 toner cartridge is simple, with easy access provided by a front panel.

Overall, the Brother HL-1450 is an impressive printer at an affordable price. It combines excellent print quality with fast speeds, and still manages to stay compact in its design.
