The Brother HL-1240 is a monochrome laser printer designed for the home or small office user. It features excellent print quality and Mac compatibility, but its limited memory might slow some users down.

The Brother HL-1240 is a fairly compact printer, measuring 9.3 inches by 14.6 inches by 14.2 inches and weighing 28 pounds. It might not be quite small enough to share a desk with, but it is by no means bulky. It has a paper capacity of 250 sheets, which is good for its class, but it only has a single drawer, so users who need to switch media types often will have to empty the entire drawer first. This may not be an issue for most users, however. The printer supports a wide variety of media types, including labels, envelopes, and transparencies.

Unlike some of Brother's laser printers, the HL-1240 supports both Windows and Mac platforms. It can be connected by either USB or parallel port. The printer only has 2 MB of RAM in its standard configuration, which is a little behind competing products. Users who print a lot of heavy graphics might find its memory limited, and using it in a shared office environment might cause some slowdowns.

Brother HL-1240 toner cartridges have a capacity of 3,000 pages, but high-yield versions are a much better value, with a capacity of 6,000 pages which means you will not have to change empty toner cartridges frequently. Users may find that third-party compatible cartridges are a much more economical option than the more expensive branded Brother HL-1240 toner cartridges. Print speed is around 12 pages per minute, which is in line with its class and price. Print quality is excellent, especially for text. Text is very sharp and defined, even at small font sizes. Graphics quality is average.

Overall, the Brother HL-1240 has a lot to offer at an affordable price. Its print speed and quality are impressive, but limited memory may be a problem for graphics-intensive use.
