The Brother DCP-8040 is a multifunction monochrome laser printer designed for the home or small office user. It has excellent print quality and fast speeds, but it lacks faxing capabilities, and scan quality is a little lacking.

The DCP-8040 can print, scan, and copy, but it has not built-in fax capabilities. Its many functions are all well-designed and easy to use. The DCP-8040 has both an automatic document feeder, which has a capacity of 50 sheets, and a flatbed scanning surface for scanning media that can't fit in the feeder. Both support a maximum of legal size for scanning. It has a generous paper capacity, with 250 sheet capacity in its main tray, but has only a single-sheet slot feed for other media types, rather than a dedicated multipurpose tray.

The Brother DCP-8040 toner cartridges come in two sizes. The standard cartridge has a capacity of 3,300 pages and the high-yield version has a capacity of 6,700 pages. The high-yield cartridge is the more economical of the two, and buying third-party compatible cartridges rather than the more expensive Brother brand cartridge can reduce costs even more.

The DCP-8040 has a fairly compact design, especially for a multifunction device. It measures 18 inches by 14 inches by 17 inches (HWD) and weighs only around 35 pounds, so it can be easily moved by one strong person, especially since it has two convenient hand grips on either side. Print speed is a fast 21 pages per minute. Print quality is excellent. It comes in a little above average on print quality, especially for a multifunction device. Text is sharp and detailed, and graphics prints are about average.

Overall, the Brother DCP-8040 makes a good choice for a well-rounded multifunction device at an affordable price. Its compact size will appeal to users with limited space, as long as lack of faxing capabilities is not a deal-breaker. Its print quality is better than most multifunction printers.
