The Brother DCP-165C is a multifunction inkjet printer designed for the home or small office user. It offers fast printing speeds, at up to 30 pages per minute for monochrome and 25 pages per minute for color, but it lacks a few features office users might miss, such as an automatic document feeder. Brother DCP-165C ink cartridges are very affordably-priced, especially compared to the competition.

Maximum printing resolution is 1200 dpi for very sharp prints, even photos. Maximum scanning resolution is 2400 dpi, in line with high-quality photo scanners. The black Brother DCP-165C inkjet cartridge has an impressive page yield of 500 pages, and each individual color cartridge has a capacity of 400 pages. The fact that the Brother DCP-165C are separated individually helps reduce waste and keep costs low.

The Brother DCP-165C puts a focus on photo printing, with a front-mounted USB port that supports connecting digital cameras via PictBridge, and the inclusion of memory card slots on the front of the machine for printing photos directly from a camera's memory card. Unfortunately, the unit lacks a color LCD screen for previewing photos before printing, making this a less convenient feature than it could have been.
