The Brother Intellifax 4100E is a monochrome fax machine and printer designed for the home or small office user. It has a wide array of faxing features and is also a capable printer and copy machine. Slow speeds don't compare well to competing units.

At first glance, the Brother 4100E may seem to be a multifunction, or all-in-one, machine. While it does have the ability to print, fax, and copy, it is not really a true all-in-one machine. The main focus is on the 4100E's faxing capabilities, and copying and scanning are more of an afterthought. Consequently, the Intellifax 4100E will appeal most to users who want a solid fax machine, with the added ability to do occasional printing and copying.

The 4100E has a wide array of faxing features. It has a 30-page automatic document feeder for scanning pages. It has a 500 page memory for storing pages when out of paper. The unit can also store up to 132 numbers for automatic dialing. The disappointing aspect of the 4100E is its slow fax transmission speed. For a unit focused on faxing, its 14.4 kbps speed just doesn't cut it. With many competing models offering 36.6 kbps speeds in a true all-in-one machine, the Intellifax 4100E doesn't hold up well.

Brother Intellifax 4100E toner cartridges are relatively inexpensive, especially when using third-party compatible cartridges. The Brother 4100E toner comes in capacities of 3,000 and a high yield capacity of 6,000 pages for an even more economical choice. Other products used in other machines have high capacities, such as Brother TN650 toner.

As a printer, the 4100E works quite well. Print quality is very sharp and detailed. Print speed is 15 pages per minute, which is also the speed of copy and fax printing, minus transmission and scanning times.
