A DIY Hanukkah Celebration

Hanukkah is a celebration of the triumph of Jewish people over religious persecution. The Jewish people enjoyed a victory over Greek soldiers many years ago. Hanukkah commemorates this fight along with the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

Hanukkah, which lasts for eight days, is sometimes referred to as the Festival of Lights. The menorah candelabrum has eight main candles and one servant candle, taller than the others and placed in the center. The servant candle is used to light the other eight candles—one each day.

Although menorahs can certainly be purchased, there are many ways to make them as well. This article has 10 DIY menorahs. And this other article has more about the story of the menorah.

Thanksgiving Decorations to be Thankful For

Giving thanks. Ideally we find ways to give thanks throughout the year. For many, however, the best time to do so is on Thanksgiving. As we gather among family and friends, we should stop and reflect on all the ways we’re blessed. Here are several ideas on how you and yours can give thanks this year. Give them a try and you just might find yourself creating new Thanksgiving traditions for years to come.

For the Wall

A great place to show your appreciation is on the wall. If you already have artwork up, it’s easy to replace your pictures with a few holiday pieces. You could make shadow boxes containing such blessings of autumn as colorful leaves and miniature pumpkins. You could even make paper leaf garlands to hang across doorways.

Why not organize a family project? Set out paints and a blank canvas, and have your guests add a few thumbprint leaves to a painted tree. When it dries, have them write on each leaf something they’re thankful for. Who knows? You just might decide to keep your Thanksgiving art up the whole year round!

Free Stats from Dell

“It is the mark of a truly intelligent person to be moved by statistics.” ~ George Bernard Shaw.

Meta-analysis. Correlations. Binomial distribution. Marginal probability of error. For those of you who love numbers, you’re in familiar territory. Those terms may even make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. If they don’t, though, you’re not alone.

A statistic is a fact or piece of data obtained from a large quantity of numerical data. They’re everywhere. You’ll hear statistics in the news—in weather predictions, for example. You’ll be persuaded by them in advertising: “75% of people sleep better when they take this new drug.” You might even look to them when making decisions. Ever look up vehicle safety ratings before buying a new car?

So why do so many people get glassy-eyed when the subject of statistics is brought up? It may be because they just don’t understand them. Dell is setting out to change this.
