The Xerox WorkCentre 3655 is a very robust multifunction laser printer that can handle printing, scanning, and copying, with optional faxing as well. Its high price tag may turn some buyers away, but its expandability and quick speeds of up to 47 pages per minute make it worth a look. Users will find the cost of Xerox 3655 printer toner is quite high, however.
The 3655 comes in two model variations. The 3655/S comes with the ability to print, copy, scan, and share via email. The 3655/S also adds the capabilities of traditional faxing, LAN faxing, and internet faxing. For the majority of users, the scan-to-email function can probably replace their faxing needs, with higher-quality results and lower phone costs. Both models come with a USB 2.0 port and a Gigabit ethernet port for networking.
The base unit measures just 22.7x22x21.3 inches, and weighs 56 pounds including the WorkCentre 3655 toner supplies and other consumables. The machine has a maximum print resolution of 1200x1200 dpi for sharp output, and it has a first page out time as fast as 8 seconds. The duplex automatic document feeder can hold up to 60 sheets, and the starting input paper capacity is 700 sheets, but can be expanded to a maximum of 2,350 sheets.
Replacement toners come in three sizes, but all are fairly expensive to replace. The standard Xerox 3655 toner cartridge can yield around 6,100 pages. The high-capacity WorkCentre 3655 toner cartridge yields 14,400 pages, while the extra high capacity version yields 25,900 pages. Unfortunately, this still leaves the cost per page for Xerox 3655 toner relatively high.
Office managers will love the tracking and auditing features of the Xerox 3655, and its upgradeability allows it to expand to meet changing needs. The high cost of supplies, however, means it will continue to take a big bite out of the office budget over time.
