The Xerox Phaser 850 has fewer moving and replaceable parts than laserjet printers which lowers wear and tear and operating costs. The Xerox 850 solid ink printer series offers three models with varying features and options to a small business or workgroup. They are the 850N, 850DP and 850DX. The Xerox Phaser 850 DX has all the bells and whistles to impress and engage any user. A 6 GB hard drive along with 128 MB memory is standard. While the Phaser 850N and 850DP are lower at 32 MB and 64 MB respectively and the hard drive is an optional enhancement. All the models have a maximum of 256 MB of memory giving you the ability to upgrade as your business demands change and grow. Double sided printing is built into the Xerox 850DX and the 850DP.

To provide laserjet quality color Xerox and Tektronix developed the solid ink technology. Xerox 850 ink only requires to be warmed up after the printer is first turned on, unlike laser jets which need to warm a fuser to print. You can reduce this time by leaving the printer on, but this increases the energy consumption. The Phaser 850 ink sticks are very affordable, but it is not the fastest solid ink printer, therefore if you are looking for speed the Xerox 8560 printer is the better choice. Its Phaser 8560 solid ink is less expensive per stick, but has a slightly higher cost per page, due to its smaller capacities.
