The Samsung ML-3051 is a monochrome laser printer designed for small or medium office environment. It features built-in networking and some useful features for the price, but its print speeds are not as fast as rated by the manufacturer.
The ML-3051 is a fairly compact printer, measuring 10.5 inches x 15 inches x 16 inches (HWD) and is fairly easy to move around, especially given the built-in handles on the sides. Toner cartridges are easily accessible by pulling down the front panel. A standard toner cartridge has a capacity of 4,000 pages. High-yield cartridges are available with a capacity of 8,000 pages. This represents the more economical choice, as it lowers the cost per page significantly.
Speaking of toner, the ML-3051 features a one-touch toner save mode which can be invoked either through software or from the clearly labeled button on its front panel. While in toner save mode, the amount of toner used per page will be reduced. There is some loss of quality, of course, but not a noticeable amount, and the quality should be more than sufficient for inter-office memos and day-to-day printing tasks. Combining the high-capacity cartridges with the toner save mode will result in a significant savings on toner costs.
Print quality is excellent. Text is clear, sharp, and dark. Graphics and photo quality suffer by comparison, but this is a common problem for laser printers in general. The quality is especially good given the printer’s price.
Print speed, though fairly fast, is quite a bit slower than rated by the manufacturer. Samsung states in the printer’s specifications a rating of 30 pages per minute, while its actual performance is around 19 pages per minute. It is not uncommon for a printer to perform slower than the manufacturer’s rating, but this is quite a margin. Still, its print speed is quite good given the price.
Overall, the Samsung ML-3051 is a very good printer for the small office environment. Easy network setup and great print quality, combined with low operating costs, make it one of the best bargains around.
