The Samsung CLP-650 is a color laser printer designed for small or medium office use. It has solid printing speeds and low printing costs, but its print quality is below average.
The design of the Samsung CLP-650 is a bit on the bulky side. For a more compact color printer, check out the HP 1600 toner printer. The CLP-650 measures 17.5 inches by 18.3 inches by 18.3 inches, and weighs 64.2 pounds. Not only is it heavier and larger than most printers in its class, but it requires more space along its right side for accessing the multipurpose tray or replacing toner cartridges. This may make it a tight fit for small office spaces, and should be considered before purchase.
One major factor in the CLP-650's favor is operating cost. The included Samsung CLP-650 toner cartridges have a capacity of 2,000 pages for each of its four cartridges. High-yield cartridges are available for replacement, however, at 4,000 pages each it still is less than the magicolor 2530 toner printer. Using the high-yield Samsung CLP-650 toner cartridges results in a very low per-page cost for printing, making it one of the most economical printers in its class. Print speed is decent, at 14 pages per minute for black, but only about 5 pages per minute for color. Print quality is below average. Text is less-defined and a bit fuzzier than most laser printers, and colors tend to be inaccurate.
The main paper tray holds 250 sheets, and the multipurpose tray can hold up to 100 sheets, depending on the media type. An optional 500-sheet drawer can be added as an upgrade, but it is expensive. The printer has a 600 MHz processor and 256 MB of memory, so it is capable of handling quite a lot of users in a networked environment without much slowdown. The CLP-650N model of the printer includes built-in networking support, which one of its major competitors, the LaserJet 3500 toner printer does not have.
Overall, the Samsung CLP-650 offers very economical printing, but some poor design choices and below average print quality really bring down its value.
