Built for the small office, the Ricoh Aficio SP 4100N laser printer is still big on performance. It can output up to 31 pages per minute, despite a small frame that will avoid taking up too much space on a desktop surface. Its affordable price tag is a definite plus as well, but the cost of Aficio SP 4100N printer toner supplies is unusually high for such a compact device.
With the base model sometimes referred to as the SP 4100, the "N" designation helps to point out its networking features. The unit is easily connected and shared across a network, making it available for multiple users. An input paper capacity of 600 sheets is divided between the 100-sheet bypass tray and the 500-sheet standard tray. Users can add up to two more trays and max it out at 1,600 sheets.
The control panel features a small LCD screen and a handful of buttons for control, with LEDs to alert users of errors or when the paper or Ricoh SP 4100N toner are running low. The SP 4100N-KP variation also includes a large keypad, which is primarily used for security features. When the secure print feature is enabled, users must enter a code at the printer before a job will start printing, keeping sensitive prints safe from prying eyes.
As with so many laser models, it all comes down to the cost of toners. Unfortunately, Ricoh SP 4100N toner cartridges don't fare as well in this regard. Even with each Aficio SP 4100N toner cartridge rated for up to 15,000 pages of output, the cost per page is much higher than those of the competition, which makes it tough to recommend for those on tight budgets.
Given its compact frame and easy-to-use design, it is easy to see why the SP 4100N would appeal to small office users who need fast performance. Unfortunately, the high cost of Ricoh SP 4100N toner makes it a poor value overall.
