The Ricoh Aficio AP2600 is a workgroup laser printer designed for small offices, but the expensive upfront price may be too much for many buyers. Its output speed of 26 pages per minute is far from best in its class, though its resolution of 1200 dpi produces sharp output quality. Adding to its problems, however, is the expensive cost of Aficio AP2600 printer toner.
The connection options of the AP2600 are disappointing, as it only includes a parallel port. The AP2600N model, on the other hand, includes an ethernet port for networking that will be much more welcome in a shared office environment. It includes 32 MB of RAM that can be upgraded to a maximum of 96 MB. The unit itself is a bit bulky for small-office desktop use, measuring 12x18.4x17.2 inches, and it weighs just less than 40 pounds, even with the Ricoh AP2600 toner installed.
Support is limited to Windows machines only, so Mac users are left out. The input paper capacity is divided between a 250-sheet main tray and a 100-sheet bypass tray that is used for alternative media without having to empty the main tray first. It can handle a maximum media size of 11.7x16.5 inches, which is quite impressive. Duplexing is available as an optional upgrade.
Replacement toners won't be needed too frequently, even in a busy office, as Ricoh AP2600 toner cartridges have a yield of 20,000 pages. The high price tag of Aficio AP2600 toner cartridges makes the cost per page quite high, however, and small offices on a budget may find it difficult to handle.
The AP2600 is a tough printer to recommend for a small office. Its speeds are a bit on the slow side, and its upfront price is beyond the budget of most potential buyers. Add to that the high cost of Ricoh AP2600 toner, and it is just too expensive for a small office to maintain.
