The Okidata C5510 is a color LED printer with multifunction capabilities, designed for the small to medium office environment. It is capable of printing, scanning, and copying, but not faxing. The C5510 features an LED-based printing engine, very similar to a laser printer, but using an LED to focus toner ink. In most respects, LED printers fall into the same class as laser printers, as performance and cost are fairly similar.
The design of the C5510 shows attention to detail. First, the machine is larger than dedicated laser printers, but does not seem overly bulky. It is a bit on the heavy side, at 83 pounds, but can be moved by two strong people. The printer requires some assembly initially, but this mainly involves attaching the flatbed scanner and automatic document feeder. Setup is fairly simple, and the instructions are clear. The control panel and LCD display are well-designed and easy to use, and the backlit LCD is easy to read, even in darker environments.
Capacities are generous, allowing it to function well in a busy office. The automatic document feeder can hold up to 50 sheets at a time for scanning and copying. The input tray holds 300 sheets, and the multi-purpose tray can hold an additional 100 sheets. The output tray is a good match for its input capacity, at 250 sheets. It is worth noting that paper capacity can not be expanded with add-on trays, so buyers will need to ensure that the present capacities will meet their needs.
Scanning speeds are incredibly fast, as the OKI C5510 is capable of scanning around 10 pages per minute in color, very fast for a multifunction printer. Combined with the automatic document feeder, this provides a way to digitize a lot of documents very quickly and easily. Print speeds are quite good, at around 13 pages per minute for black and 8 pages per minute for color. Print quality is not quite as good as a laser printer, with some printing problems showing up, especially for color prints. Color prints tend to have a somewhat “shiny” look that can be distracting.
Okidata C5510 toner cartridges come in two different sizes: standard and high capacity. The standard toner cartridges have a moderate page yield of 3,000 pages per color. While this is sufficient for any small to medium office, it’s much more economical to go with the high capacity Okidata C5510 toner cartridges which have a 5,000 page yield per cartridge.
Overall, the Okidata C5510 is a well-designed and capable multifunction device with the capacity to handle a large number of users. Fast scanning speeds are impressive, but lackluster color printing and lack of faxing capabilities may be a deal breaker for some buyers.
