The Okidata C5400 is a color laser (LED) printer designed for the small to medium office environment. Its fast speeds, especially for color documents, are truly impressive, but difficult menu navigation and problems with print quality are definite hurdles.
The C5400 uses LED technology for transferring ink toner onto the page, rather than a laser. It is often grouped with color laser printers, however, as the technology and implementations are very similar.
The OKI C5400 is designed to be network-friendly from the start, much like an earlier edition of this model, the Okidata C5100 toner printer. With the included ethernet port, it is easy to connect and setup the printer to be shared across the network and printable from any connected PC. There is also a USB port for personal use. The printer includes an internal web interface, which can be accessed with a web browser from any computer on the network. This interface allows users to manage print jobs, view status, and change settings without being in front of the printer.
The backlit LCD screen is a plus, as it makes the screen easier to read in darker environments, but it is limited to two lines of text. This limitation often makes navigating the menu more difficult than it should be, and it can be difficult to find the necessary option on its fairly small screen.
Print speeds are quite fast, at around 24 pages per minute in black, and 16 pages per minute in color. Unfortunately, print quality is where the C5400 really falters. Text quality is generally good, but begins to lose clarity at smaller font sizes. Given that most users buy a laser printer for sharp text, this can be an issue. Color printing, though very fast, is not up to par with most laser printers, such as the LaserJet CP1518 toner printer, with over-saturation and poor readability being the main culprits.
Color Okidata C5400 toner cartridges are available as either a standard 3,000 page yield or high capacity 5,000 page yield, while the black Okidata toner cartridges are only available in the 5,000 page yield. Having this option is good for offices who mainly print black and white pages.
Overall, the Okidata C5400 is a very capable network printer with fast speeds, especially for color prints. Unfortunately its print quality lags behind its competition.
