The Okidata C5200 is a color laser (LED) printer designed for the small to medium office. It sports fast print speeds, but its print quality often leaves something to be desired.
Although the OKI C5200 is grouped in with laser printers, it actually uses LED technology for printing instead of a laser. LED technology has some advantages over lasers, but also a few drawbacks. Advantages include faster print speeds and lower power usage, while the drawbacks include lower quality prints and inks that sometimes appear shiny on the page. Unfortunately, the C5200 exhibits this problem, and it detracts from the overall value of the unit.
Speed is one of the C5200’s main draws, as it prints up to 24 pages per minute black and 16 pages per minute in color. The color print speed is particularly exceptional, and owes to the unit’s single-pass printing technology, which allows the printer to print the entire page in one pass, instead of the multiple passes required by most color laser printers. Printers with a single-pass engine tend to be bulkier, but the C5200 bucks this trend, and is fairly compact, measuring just 13 x 16 x 22 inches (HWD). It is certainly not easy to move around, weighing in at 60 pounds, but its footprint is small enough to fit into fairly tight spaces.
The Okidata C5200 toner cartridges are available in capacities of 3,000 and 5,000 pages, with the high-yield cartridges being the more economical choice. Even with the high-yield cartridges, however, per-page costs are somewhat more expensive than the average laser printer. Costs are approximately 2.5 cents per page for black, and 14 cents for color using high-yield Okidata C5200 toner cartridges. Although the printer’s upfront cost is low, it is worth noting the higher per-page costs, as it will increase the ongoing expense of the printer.
Overall, the Okidata C5200 is a well-designed printer, with fast speeds and a good implementation of single-pass color printing. Print quality is not up to par with most laser printers, however, making it difficult to recommend unless raw speed is a high priority.
