The Lexmark T640 is a monochrome laser printer designed for the small or medium office environment. It offers decent speeds and a number of expansion options, but print quality is below average.
The design of the Lexmark T640 is relatively compact for its class. It is not by any means small, but its footprint does not preclude it from fitting in small office spaces. The unit weighs around 38 pounds with the toner cartridge and includes hand grips on the sides, allowing it to be moved around fairly easily. Its control panel is quite large for a dedicated printer, and includes a full numeric keypad. While the numeric keypad may seem out of place for a laser printer without multifunction capabilities, it is mainly included due to the T640's security features, many of which require pin codes and passwords for access.
The Lexmark T640 also includes a front-mounted USB port, which allows users to connect and print directly from a thumb drive for convenience. Its input paper capacity is 250 sheets in a standard paper drawer, and a multipurpose tray with a capacity of 100 sheets can be accessed by opening a front panel.
The Lexmark T640 is extremely expandable. Expansion options include a duplex unit, an envelope feeder, additional input drawers, and a wireless networking option. While this expandable helps to future-proof the printer, the add-ons are very expensive, making them less appealing than buying a printer with some of these options already included.
Print speed is fairly decent at around 26 pages per minute. Print quality is the T640's one major flaw. Unfortunately, print quality is below average for a printer in its price range, and does not stand up well against the T640's other stellar features. Lexmark T640 toner cartridges have a very high capacity to keep up with the printer's expandability. At 21,000 pages, the Lexmark T640 toner's high capacity will be quite satisfactory for any small or medium office environment.
Overall, the Lexmark T640 is a very well-designed printer with some nice bonus features included. Unfortunately, its poor print quality makes it difficult to recommend over the competition.
